Comedy Night – NSB

NSB Comedy Night at Off The Hook

When we heard about a new comedy night in NSB we were immediately hooked.  Live comedy is awesome, and a funny night out was one of the few activities that was missing from our sweet oceanside community.  Needless to say, we were excited to see an option at one of New Smyrna Beach’s most popular Beachside spots.

Before we dig into our fun night at Off The Hook, let me give you a little background on these intimate comedy shows.  You are not going to see Amy Schumer and Kevin Hart playing local venues like this.  10 or 15 years ago, though, they were toiling this small club scene, honing their craft and chasing an elusive dream that only comes for a small sliver of the talented folks entertaining people like us night after night.

For every Hart or Schumer, there are hundreds of creative comedy minds who never catch that big break, but many of them are still funny as hell.  I’ve been to dozens of small comedy venues in my life, and I’ve never regretted it.  Not once.  Yes, there are usually a handful of bits that don’t work out as the entertainers envision, but there are always far more of the funny moments.

Our first trip to Friday Night Comedy at Off the Hook turned out to be a great time.  First off, the event is FREE!  There’s no admission charge, plus there are Appetizer and drink specials.  More importantly, we were witnessing talented, hungry performers who made us laugh for an hour or so.

Sara Geimer was the headliner. She’s a young nerdish engineer with a keen sense of humor.  She had a distinctive, maybe even quirky delivery but her stories about the work and dating scene were fantastic. Her tale about Pringles and Tic Tacs was hilarious…  Check her out when she’s in your neighborhood, she just oozes with talent.

Lisa Rodriguez opened the show and shared a few witty stories about parenting, divorce and dating as the mother of teen boys.  She did a great job sharing the humorous side of parenting from the perspective of a single parent.  Good stuff!

We spoke to the two performers after the show, and they both build their acts around real-life stories.  As we chatted afterwards, they both tossed out humorous anecdotes which will hopefully find their way into future appearances.  I would unhesitatingly come back to see them both again.

A nice shout out to Adam Lowery of Residual Rendezvous Productions.  They put on the show, and he served as the emcee.  Funny dude with a comfortable stage presence – his portion of the act was entertaining, as well.  NSB Comedy Night continues on Fridays at Off The Hook for the next few weeks. Upcoming shows include an Open Mic night on October 26th.  And, don’t worry who is playing the other nights – comedy is always a good thing.  But,if you insist, Marcus Crespo headlines on Oct. 19 and Antwon Robinson on Nov. 2nd.  Come check out some creative folks and prepare to laugh.

The evening was all about the comedy, but we enjoyed our large dish of nachos, the deeply discounted drinks and received killer service from Ari!

Residual Rendezvous is also hosting a Johnny Cash Tribute show in December.  We will be there.  Get more information here: NSB Events – Johnny Cash.
