MDC Full Moon Boat Tour

We’ve been curious about the Marine Discovery Center’s full moon tour for the past few years and finally had an opportunity to book a trip. The comfortable pontoon boat ride is a two-hour excursion packed with interesting local knowledge and beautiful scenery.

On the night of our trip, we started off with a visit to the nearby rookery. A cool variety of interesting birds blanketed the tiny island. The mangroves were covered with white ibises to the point the island looked like a super-sized gardenia in full bloom.

From the rookery, we headed North through the Indian River Lagoon. Our destination was Ponce Inlet and the historic lighthouse that keeps watch over the waterways. En route we were treated to a spectacular sunset and interesting facts about the sights and the diverse nature that define the local waterway. The trip was narrated by Lisa, our friendly and informative Naturalist for the evening. Lisa teamed with Captain Gary to make the journey comfortable and entertaining.

A night time view of the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse

Once we arrived the inlet, we learned about both lighthouses. Yup, there used to be one on the NBS side of the inlet, too. We’ll keep those little tidbits to ourselves as an enticement to get you to book a tour of your own. The highlight was watching a small orange dot appear on the horizon and quickly grew into a huge full moon, blazing into the sky in a bright orange hue. It was stunning.

The trip back in the dark was more subdued, but there were a few additional nuggets shared with the passengers and some final moments to enjoy the sun dancing across local palm trees.

Our golden full moon.

We had a fun time and would recommend booking a tour for the next full moon. Tickets were $30 for adults and can be booked by calling The MDC Welcome Center at 386-428-4828 or by visiting their website here: Marine Discovery Center.
