Pappas – An NSB Institution

I’ve driven by this Dixie Highway landmark for many years. I thought it looked intriguing, but just never managed to make it there for a meal. Last week, I pulled in after a round of golf for a quick late evening dinner, and quickly realized how special this place is.

We decided to try the drive-in experience, a rare local opportunity to flashback to a simpler time. Our friendly server greeted us at the car and welcomed us. She shared a few daily specials, a couple of recommendations and a little bit of Pappas’ history.

The drive-in is one of NSB’s oldest eateries, as it has been around for 40+ years. They have loyal fans who love their chicken liver… we decided on sandwiches and milkshakes. When I asked for their best sandwich, our server quickly recommended the grilled chicken breast. It sounded great, so I ordered it and my son ordered a cheeseburger.

Grilled Chicken Breast

The food arrived quickly, and it hit the spot. The grilled chicken breast was topped with bacon, swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato and mayo, and was simply delicious. On their huge menu, Pappas prominently claims that their burgers are famous… Not sure I would go that far, but this patty was pretty good, and an absolute bargain – about half the price of most other burgers in town.

I need to mention the milkshakes, too. We order the regular size, which was a stout 16 oz pour. They were thick and delicious – absolute bargains and highly recommended, in fact, they may be the best in NSB.

Bottom line: This place is worth a visit. And when you stop in, make the most of your visit and eat at the drive-in.

Our meal served on a car window tray.

NSB Insider Tips:

  • They serve a 32 oz. milkshake for $3.50. That is the best dessert deal in NSB.
  • Their early bird specials (available inside) are only $5.75, and include two sides, and a pudding. That’s a bargain.
