Yellow Dog Eats

You know it is the off-season when you leave Canal Street and walk into NSB’s most creative sandwich joint, and see the entire restaurant is empty.  Yellow Dog Eats (YDE) is typically packed inside and outside, so we were pleasantly surprised, and if you have not sampled their fine food yet, you might want to get in there soon, before the crowds return.

We walked out back and found a few other customers lingering about, listening to a live two piece.  The music at YDE is always good – their acoustic acts dish out distinctive cover tunes, in a comfortable outdoor patio setting.  But, the real attraction at the Canal Street eatery are the amazing sandwiches. On this night, we ordered The Holy Crap and Rufus, and damn were they good…

The Holy Crap is a turkey sandwich like you’ve never experienced before.  A stack of honey mesquite roasted chicken, topped with avocado, pecan-smoked bacon and goat cheese on thick multigrain bread.  It is a huge stack of awesomeness, where the flavors come together perfectly.

The Rufus is a hellacious tower of barbecued perfection that is impossible to fit into your mouth: Pulled pork, thick brie cheese, crispy onion ribbons, and cherry pepper rings, topped with barbecue sauce and a raspberry melba.

Some of the sauces here are quite unique and possibly a little unusual to the palate – but if you have any concerns, just ask for the sauce on the side – they are flexible in the kitchen.

Yellow Dog Eats NachosI was so excited about the sandwiches, that I failed to mention our appetizer.  We ordered the Pulled Pork Nachos.  I have two words to describe this dish: “Ah – mazing!” (Check out the snippet from their menu to see how nachos were meant to be served.

The beer selection is above average, and they feature some nice Florida brews, but during our visit, they were actually out of my first few choices – perhaps that was just a sign of the slow season.  Service was decent, but nothing special.

NSB Insider Tips:
  • Swap out the Kettle Chips and Cole Slaw for the homemade Hummus.
  • We loved our food on this visit, but the Club Elvis is a hunk, a hunk of burnin’ love, pulled pork and gouda on a bun.
