New Smyrna Offers True Escape

New Smyrna Beach offers everything a beach lover could ask for during the daytime, but after the sun sets, there are only a handful of memorable offerings. And, one of the coolest of those experiences is a visit to the NSB Escape Room.

We visited this weekend with the extended NSB Guide family and tried out their awesome new room, Alien Autopsy, and everyone loved it. The new challenge had yet to be solved by any group within the one hour limit, but we were seasoned veterans who were going to put an end to that.

If you are not familiar with the Escape Room concept, your group is locked in a room, and embarks on a scavenger hunt filled with puzzles and challenges. Solve them all, and you escape. Most of them, like the ones at NSB Escape Room, give their captives an hour to break free. It’s a great bonding experience and a fun way to use your brain and creativity in a novel way.

Alien Autopsy

This new room is touted as their hardest room yet, and it definitely boasts some tough challenges and interesting twists.

Alien Autopsy is a big room, the largest at NSB Escape Room, and can accommodate 10 guests. The space comes with its very own dead alien and a slew of other cool props. In total, there were about a dozen entertaining puzzles to solve. Many of the tasks were worked sequentially, but there are plenty of opportunities to divide and conquer. All of the challenges are very different, giving each member of our party plenty of chances to contribute.

Your resident Alien
Our theme revolved around research for this dude.

Each of the rooms here feature puzzles and challenges created by owner Melonnie. It is a unique touch that makes our local place even more special. And, to be clear, you do not need to be a genius to fare well. A creative perspective is a huge help, and the ability to work as a team and divide and conquer is a key to success.

They offer six fun rooms, all boasting totally different experiences at their second-floor location on Canal Street. When you register for a game, ask about the difficulty levels and pick one appropriate for your crew. Each adventure includes a themed challenge where your group is joined in the room the entire time by a narrator. The host is a nice touch that is uncommon at similar places. Crystal was great, she spent the hour with us, and was there to provide three official clues, and a few gentle nudges as we traveled through our adventure.

The NSB Escape Room is a fun escape from the real world. The adventures are a great way to bond with friends and family and a refreshing break from constantly being tethered to your smart phones.

As we walked out of the room 61 minutes and 39 seconds after our adventure began, Alien Autopsy’s perfect win rate remained intact. Get out there soon and be the first one to beat the room!

NSB Insider Tips

  • When you visit, sign-up for their mailing list as they are very generous with special offers for repeat visitors.
  • Get there 15 minutes early. You will need to sign a waiver, and take care of any last minute bathroom stops. Remember, you are locked in a room for an hour.
  • Pay attention to the narrator at the beginning of the event. Trust us, there are nuggets in the preamble that will help you out, including, “Use the whiteboard.”
  • If you are a couple or small group, they are happy to pair you up with others. But, some of the rooms work with as few as two participants. For Alien Autopsy, we think 6-8 is the perfect number.
  • Grab a bite to eat at Yellow Dog Eats before or after your game. It is less than a block away.
